Interview by magazine La Ruta del Jazz – No. 16 September 2014

“For a long time she was one of the few female instrumentalists who wasn’t a singer in our jazz scene. Elisabet Raspall (Vilanova i la Geltrú, Spain, 1966) claims to be heir of Mercedes Rossy, a non-vocalist jazzwoman, pioneer in our scene. Raspall followed her example and studied in the United States with Fred Hersch, Barry Harris and George Cables. She returned to Barcelona and started a career at the beginnings of the ’90s, with travel companions the likes of Benet Palet, Marc Miralta, Chris Cheek or Dani Pérez, with whom she recorded her new album, Present (Raspall Records). A restless musician, over the years Raspall added to her list of collaborations with musicians like Marc Cuevas, Ramiro Rosa, Rogerio Botter Maio, Aleix Tobias or Jordi Mestres. With all of them, she shared her sensory and melancholy vision of the music, rhythm and melodies that reflect emotions, impressions and moments that reproduce the sound of the sea. Surging seas, rough seas, quiet seas.”

“After releasing Converses (Raspall Records, 2013) with the trio El Colectivo, Elisabet Raspall returns to duo format, this time with guitarist Dani Pérez, who we’ve recently listened to with the David Mengual Slow Quartet. They meet again on this recording after having coincided in various projects, including the quintet led by the Catalan pianist, to give us and each other the gift of Present, where intimate atmospheres with splashes of multiple forms of complicity are predominant.”
